Breastfeeding, although natural, can sometimes feel like a challenging journey for some new mothers. But don't be discouraged! Every difficulty has its solution, and with a little patience and supportive guidance, you can experience fulfilling and peaceful breastfeeding. Here, I reveal the most common challenges faced by breastfeeding mothers and practical solutions to overcome them.
Sore nipples 😢
Many mothers face nipple pain during the first weeks of breastfeeding. This unpleasant sensation is often due to the baby’s poor positioning at the breast or too strong a suck from the baby.
To relieve this pain, check that your baby's body is facing yours, tummy to tummy. I also recommend making sure the baby takes a large part of the areola into their mouth, not just the nipple. After each feeding, apply a few drops of your milk on your nipples to soothe them. Using nursing pads between feedings can also provide extra protection.
Breast engorgement
Engorgement occurs when the breasts become too full and painful, usually during milk let-down or after infrequent feedings. To relieve this discomfort, dear ladies, breastfeed your baby frequently, ideally 8 to 12 times every 24 hours.
Before feeding, apply warm compresses to encourage milk flow. If your breast is very tight, try expressing a little milk manually before starting to breastfeed. A little tip: between feedings, cold compresses can help reduce inflammation.
Insufficient milk production 🍼
Some mothers worry about not producing enough milk for their baby. This concern can be related to infrequent feedings, poor latch by the baby, or the mother's stress and fatigue.
To stimulate your milk production, I would recommend increasing the frequency of feedings and ensuring your baby empties one breast completely before switching to the other. Also, allow yourself rest periods and make sure to stay well hydrated. If necessary, using a breast pump can help further stimulate milk production.
Blocked milk ducts
A blocked milk duct can cause a painful, hard area in the breast. This problem often arises due to poor breast drainage or a bra that is too tight. To unblock the duct, gently massage the affected area during breastfeeding and apply heat before feeding. Also, varying breastfeeding positions can help better empty all ducts. Don’t forget to wear comfortable bras that do not compress your breasts.
Mastitis
Did you know? Mastitis is an inflammation of the breast that can develop into an infection if not treated quickly. It can result from an untreated blocked milk duct or cracked nipples allowing bacteria to enter. If you suspect mastitis, continue to breastfeed frequently, starting with the affected breast. Rest as much as possible and drink plenty of water. Applying warm compresses before feedings can relieve pain. If symptoms persist or worsen, consult a doctor promptly.
