What are the benefits of a nursing bra?
A nursing bra is a type of bra specially designed for women and new mothers who breastfeed.
This piece of women’s lingerie provides comfortable support for breasts that increase in size during breastfeeding and allows easy, discreet access to the breast to make feeding the baby easier.
• Nursing bras are fitted with clips, snap fasteners, or panels that can be easily opened with one hand, allowing mothers to expose the breast without having to remove the bra entirely.
• Made from soft, stretchy fabric consisting of 95% organic cotton and 5% elastane, our bras adapt to the changes in breast size that occur during breastfeeding. Without underwires to avoid compressing the milk ducts, our nursing bra offers maximum comfort for mothers with no risk to their health.
• While very comfortable, our nursing bra styles are also designed to provide adequate bust support. Some feature wide straps that adjust at the back, adapting to changes in size and shape to always ensure a perfect fit.
• The nursing bras offered by You&Milk are easy to care for, machine washable, and designed to withstand frequent use, an essential feature given how often milk stains occur.
• Our nursing bras are available in a variety of styles and colors, including off-white and terracotta. There’s a nursing bra to suit every bust size, with styles ranging from cup size 80E to 105D.
When should you buy a nursing bra?
L's purchase of your nursing bra is an important step in your journey to motherhood, and choosing the right time will affect your comfort and well-being as a new mom.
When to buy your nursing bra should depend on how your body changes and what you need at each stage of motherhood.
During your pregnancy (7th or 8th month)
You&Milk recommends waiting until your 7th or 8th month of pregnancy before buying your first nursing bra.
At this stage, your body has already undergone many changes, particularly in your breasts, which become more sensitive and fuller in preparation for breastfeeding.
Buying your bra at this point gives you a more accurate idea of your final breast size. To help, use a tape measure to measure your underbust and bust, then refer to the size guide on our online store. We recommend choosing a size up from your measurements to allow for your milk coming in after giving birth and before each feed.
After giving birth
You can also wait until your baby is born to buy your first nursing bra. This can be especially helpful when your milk first comes in, helping protect you from leaks and prevent stains on your clothes.
However, You&Milk recommends making this purchase a few weeks before giving birth. That way, you won't be caught off guard after the birth, when you'll have other priorities than finding the ideal nursing bra.
During your breastfeeding period
Finally, it's not uncommon to need to buy new bras during your breastfeeding period. There can be several reasons: replacing a worn-out style, a change in your daily routine that means you need more bras, or size adjustments due to changes in your breast size.
What’s the difference between a nursing bralette and a nursing bra?
The main difference between a nursing bralette and a nursing bra is their design and level of support, although they have a similar main purpose: to make breastfeeding easier while keeping the breasts comfortable and supported.
The nursing bralette:
Nursing bralettes are generally designed without underwire and made from softer, stretchier fabrics. They offer a more relaxed fit, making them ideal for everyday wear and nighttime, especially during the first few weeks after giving birth, when comfort is essential.
Although comfortable, nursing bralettes offer more moderate support than nursing bras. They’re ideal for smaller to medium busts or for relaxing at home.
These women’s lingerie pieces have features that make breastfeeding easier, such as clips or layers of fabric that fold back easily for access to the breast, with greater simplicity and ease of use.
Nursing bra:
Nursing bras are available with or without underwire in a wider range of styles and levels of support. Underwire styles are designed not to compress the milk ducts, while providing better support.
They offer a higher level of support for all breast sizes, especially fuller busts that need more support while breastfeeding. This is particularly useful during more intense activities or on outings where extra support is needed. Like nursing bras, they have practical breastfeeding features, but often include additional options such as adjustable straps, molded cups and sometimes more stylish details.
