When should you buy a nursing bra?

The right time to buy your nursing bra depends on how your body changes and what you need at each stage of motherhood.
During your pregnancy (7th or 8th month)
You&Milk recommends waiting until your 7th or 8th month of pregnancy before buying your first nursing bra.
At this stage, your body has already undergone many changes, especially around your breasts, which become more sensitive and fuller in preparation for breastfeeding.
Buying your bra at this point gives you a more accurate idea of your final bust size. To help you, use a tape measure to measure your underbust and bust, then refer to the size guide on our online store. We recommend choosing a size up from your measurements to account for milk let-down after giving birth and before each feed.
After giving birth
You can also wait until your baby is born to buy your first nursing bra. This precaution can be especially helpful during your first milk let-downs, helping protect you from leaks and prevent stains on your clothes.
However, You&Milk recommends buying one a few weeks before giving birth. That way, you won’t be caught off guard after the birth, when you’ll have other priorities than finding the perfect nursing bra.
During your breastfeeding journey
Finally, it’s not uncommon to need to buy new nursing bras during your breastfeeding journey. There may be various reasons: replacing a worn-out bra, changes to your daily routine that require more support, or size adjustments due to changes in your bust size.
What's the difference between a nursing bralette and a nursing bra?
The main difference between a nursing bralette and a nursing bra lies in their design and level of support, even though they share a similar main purpose: making breastfeeding easier while providing comfort and support for the breasts.
The nursing bralette:
Nursing bralettes are generally designed without underwire and made from softer, stretchier fabrics. They have a more relaxed fit, making them ideal for everyday wear and at night, especially during the first few weeks after giving birth, when comfort is paramount.
Although comfortable, nursing bralettes provide more moderate support than nursing bras. They're ideal for small to medium-sized breasts or for relaxing at home.
These pieces of women's lingerie have features that make breastfeeding easier, such as clips or layers of fabric that fold back easily for access to the breast, while being simpler and easier to use.
Nursing bra:
Nursing bras are available with or without underwire in a wider range of styles and support levels. Underwire models are designed not to compress the milk ducts while providing greater support.
They offer a higher level of support for all breast sizes, particularly for larger breasts that need more support while breastfeeding. This is especially useful during more intense activities or for outings that call for better support. Like nursing bras, they have practical breastfeeding features, but often include additional options such as adjustable straps, molded cups, and sometimes more stylish details.
