The birth of a baby is a huge upheaval. For the body, for the heart, for all the senses.
In this intense passage between intrauterine life and the outside world, some rituals help accompany the baby with more gentleness.
Among them, the Sensorial Bath Ritual®.
Much more than a simple hygiene care, this bath is a true moment of connection, security, and soothing, for both the baby and the parents.💛
What is the Sensory Bath Ritual®? 🛁
It is a bath given with a slow, containing, and respectful approach to the baby's rhythm. It aims to recreate, as much as possible, the sensations experienced in utero: warmth, floating, containment, security.
It is recommended to do it during the baby's first 3 weeks of life, and up to 6 weeks at most. For premature babies, we base it on the theoretical due date.
The sensory bath is a calm moment, without rush. We use a swaddle to wrap the baby and we favor gentle and continuous movements while adapting to the newborn's reactions and needs.
The benefits of the Sensory Bath for baby & parents 🥰
There are many benefits:
- A gentle transition after birth : Birth is an intense experience for the baby: noise, light, gravity, separation from the mother's body. The sensory bath helps to slow down, regain familiar landmarks, and offer a safe space where the baby can settle. It provides a moment of pause, away from demands and this new life.
- Deep soothing : The warmth of the water, the wrapping, and the slow movements promote a reduction of stress and tensionMany babies deeply relax there, either by watching with open eyes or by falling asleep in the water for a few minutes.
- A support for the attachment bond : This ritual is a time of looking, presence, and listening. It nourishes the parent-child bondbaby and strengthens the feeling of emotional security.
- Giving confidence to parents : The ritual allows parents to be active participants in this moment by gaining confidence in the gestures and reading the baby's needs. It sometimes helps to release certain emotions related to pregnancy or childbirth.
How does a Sensorial Bath Ritual take place? 🫧
Each Sensorial Bath Ritual® is unique, but some fundamental principles structure it:
- A exchange time where you share your story with me in your own words and feelings.
-
The swaddling of your child. I will show you on a doll, and it is up to you to apply the swaddling technique.
-
A skin-to-skin time, a cuddle or breastfeeding for babies who are nursing. I can also show you some massage moves if your child is available at that time.
An important word
Sometimes the baby cries, keeps their eyes wide open, seems alert, or the bath ends earlier than expected. And that is perfectly OK.
Each baby reacts differently, each birth leaves a unique imprint, and not all immediately relax in the water.
The smooth and silent images often seen on Instagram can give the illusion that the sensorial bath is always a suspended, calm, and magical moment. The reality is sometimes more nuanced.
In the sensorial bath ritual, there is nothing to succeed at. It is simply about welcoming what is there, in the moment.
The Sensorial Bath Ritual® must be performed by a professional trained in this approach to ensure the physical and emotional safety of the baby and the family as a whole. It is only possible if the baby is medically stable, without fever. If you are unsure, ask your doctor for approval.
